The second season, released in 2017, takes place a year after the events of the first season. Will, now recovered from his ordeal in the “Upside Down,” a dark and alternate dimension, is struggling to cope with the trauma he experienced. A new threat emerges in the form of the “Shadow Monster,” a powerful entity from the Upside Down that seeks to destroy Hawkins and the world.
Interestingly, the Duffer Brothers have cited Westerns as an influence on Stranger Things, particularly in the way the series explores themes of community, camaraderie, and the struggle between good and evil. The small-town setting of Hawkins, Indiana, and the kids’ adventures, evoke memories of classic Westerns, where heroes band together to face down outlaws and monsters.
In an interview, Matt Duffer explained, “We were definitely influenced by Westerns… The idea of a group of kids who are outsiders, who are misfits, and who have to band together to survive, is very much a Western trope.” This influence is evident in the way the kids work together to overcome the supernatural threats that face their town.
Season 3 introduces new characters, such as Erica Sinclair, Lucas’s younger sister, and Robin Buckley, a quirky and charismatic coworker of Steve Harrington’s at the Starcourt Mall. The season explores themes of identity, loyalty, and the consequences of playing with forces beyond human control. The action-packed finale features a heart-pumping showdown at the Starcourt Mall, as the kids face off against the Mind Flayer and its minions.
